Durational Evidence That Tokyo Japanese Vowel Devoicing Is Not Gradient Reduction.James Tanner, Morgan Sonderegger & Francisco Torreira - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
A central question in the Japanese high vowel devoicing literature concerns whether vowels are devoiced through a categorical process or via gradient reduction. Examining how vowel height and consonantal voicing condition phrase-internal CV duration in a corpus of spontaneous Tokyo Japanese, it was found that CVs containing high vowels are substantially shorter before voiceless consonants, whilst non-high vowels do not exhibit comparable shortening. This quantitative difference between CV durations suggests a controlled temporal compression of the CV, consistent with views that (...)

  3. The Pandemic Experience Survey II: A Second Corpus of Subjective Reports of Life Under Social Restrictions During COVID-19 in the UK, Japan, and Mexico.Mark M. James, Havi Carel, Matthew Ratcliffe, Tom Froese, Jamila Rodrigues, Ekaterina Sangati, Morgan Montoya, Federico Sangati & Natalia Koshkina - 2022 - Frontiers in Public Health.
In August 2021, Froese et al. published survey data collected from 2,543 respondents on their subjective experiences living under imposed social distancing measures during COVID-19 (1). The questionnaire was issued to respondents in the UK, Japan, and Mexico. By combining the authors’ expertise in phenomenological philosophy, phenomenological psychopathology, and enactive cognitive science, the questions were carefully phrased to prompt reports that would be useful to phenomenological investigation and theorizing (2–4). These questions reflected the various author’s research interests (e.g., technology, grief, (...)

Who Counts in Official Statistics? Ethical‐Epistemic Issues in German Migration and the Collection of Racial or Ethnic Data.Daniel James, Morgan Thompson & Tereza Hendl - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
In European countries (excluding the UK and Ireland), official statistics do not use racial or ethnic categories, but instead rely on proxies to collect data about discrimination. In the German microcensus, the proxy category adopted is ‘migration background’ (Migrationshintergrund): an individual has a ‘migration background’ when one or more of their parents does not have German citizenship by birth. We apply a coupled ethical-epistemic analysis to the ‘migration background’ category to illuminate how the epistemic issues contribute to ethical ones. Our (...)

An attitude for gratitude: how gratitude is understood, experienced and valued by the British public: research report.James Arthur, Kristján Kristjánsson, Liz Gulliford & Blaire Morgan - unknown
The subject of gratitude has gained traction in recent years in academic and popular circles. However, limited attention has been devoted to understanding what laypeople understand by the concept of gratitude; the meaning of which tends to have been assumed in the literature. Furthermore, while intrapersonal and interpersonal benefits of gratitude have been extolled in this growing body of research, there has been little assessment of the value laypeople place on gratitude themselves, or whether and how they think it might (...)

Testing the mate-choice hypothesis of the female orgasm: disentangling traits and behaviours.James M. Sherlock, Morgan J. Sidari, Emily Ann Harris, Fiona Kate Barlow & Brendan P. Zietsch - 2016 - Socioaffective Neuroscience and Psychology 6.
BackgroundThe evolution of the female orgasm in humans and its role in romantic relationships is poorly understood. Whereas the male orgasm is inherently linked to reproduction, the female orgasm is not linked to obvious reproductive or survival benefits. It also occurs less consistently during penetrative sex than does the male orgasm. Mate-choice hypotheses posit that the wide variation in female orgasm frequency reflects a discriminatory mechanism designed to select high-quality mates.ObjectiveWe aimed to determine whether women report that their orgasm frequency (...)

Making microbes matter: essay review of Maureen A. O’Malley’s Philosophy of Microbiology.Gregory J. Morgan, James Romph, Joshua L. Ross, Elizabeth Steward & Claire Szipszky - 2018 - Biology and Philosophy 33 (1-2):12.
In a pioneering book, Philosophy of Microbiology, Maureen O’Malley argues for the philosophical importance of microbes through an examination of their impact on ecosystems, evolution, biological classification, collaborative behavior, and multicellular organisms. She identifies many understudied conceptual issues in the study of microbes. If philosophers follow her lead, the philosophy of biology will be expanded and enriched.

Neither Ethical nor Prudent: Why Not to Choose Normothermic Regional Perfusion.Adam Omelianchuk, Alexander Morgan Capron, Lainie Friedman Ross, Arthur R. Derse, James L. Bernat & David Magnus - forthcoming - Hastings Center Report.
In transplant medicine, the use of normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) in donation after circulatory determination of death raises ethical difficulties. NRP is objectionable because it restores the donor's circulation, thus invalidating a death declaration based on the permanent cessation of circulation. NRP's defenders respond with arguments that are tortuous and factually inaccurate and depend on introducing extraneous concepts into the law. However, results comparable to NRP's—more and higher‐quality organs and more efficient allocation—can be achieved by removing organs from deceased donors (...)

Widerspruch und Subjektivität: Eine problemgeschichtliche Studie zum jungen Hegel.James S. Morgan - 1979 - The Owl of Minerva 11 (2):7-8.
In the introduction to Widerspruch und Subjektivität, Paul Cain attempts to relate his work to the Hegel critiques of Kierkegaard, Marx, and Adorno. Perhaps he should have discussed specific facets of these critiques in the body of the work as well, or advanced his own. His discussions of “The Unhappy Consciousnes”, and recognition contain much that is relevant for the Hegel reception of the above mentioned figures. His own thesis that the young Hegel “contaminates” or conflates contradictions implies a criticism (...)

    Memories of fos.Tom Curran & James I. Morgan - 1987 - Bioessays 7 (6):255-258.
Induction of c‐fos expression occurs following treatment of diverse cell types with agents that trigger mitogenesis, differentiation or membrane depolarization. We suggest that c‐fos may be regarded as a marker for a set of rapidly induced genes (termed cellular immediate‐early genes) whose function is to couple extracellular stimulation to long‐term responses. In the brain, these genes may contribute to the adaptive alterations involved in neuronal plasticity.

    Marx's Social Critique of Culture. [REVIEW]James S. Morgan - 1984 - Review of Metaphysics 38 (1):117-118.
Dupré remarks in the last chapter that Marx would have been amused, but not surprised, by capitalism's success in turning the counterculture into a profitable business enterprise. The Critical Theory, if not Marxism itself, was very active in this revolt against bourgeois values. Given the fact that it may even have exacerbated what Dupré decries as the commercialization of culture, one could expect him to adopt a combined systematic-historical approach. One would anticipate his rejection of a deterministic structure-superstructure model in (...)
